What Christmas Is All About

It's just a few days until Christmas, and of course this means many things to many people.  Presents, parties, family gatherings, shopping, Santa Claus, the birth of Jesus....  But what does it really mean?  What is Christmas really about?

The answer is rather simple, actually.  Simple enough for children to understand it and simple enough to be put in a short segment of a cartoon.  So in celebration of the season, and if you're wondering what it's all about, I give you the answer....

  1. From a purely historical perspective, Christmas was about appeasing the recently (and in many cases forcefully) converted masses by Christianizing their old pagan customs. It probably helped keep early middle ages society from being more chaotic than it already was.

I don't see any problem with celebrating the birth of Christ in December (it is certainly an event worth celebrating), but I don't think we as Christians should be under any illusions that Jesus was actually born on December 25th. Lots of historical evidence(such as the fact that Israeli shepherds don't have their flocks in the fields during December) makes Jesus being a December baby highly unlikely.
